On Thursday, April 30, the King, 77, and Queen, 78, bid farewell to the American president, 79, and first lady, 56, at the White House. The Trumps welcomed them outside, posing for a photo op, before receiving the royals in the Diplomatic Reception Room.

They will spend the rest of the day in Virginia on a series of engagements, including attending a block party celebrating America's 250th anniversary of independence.

The royals traveled across the pond to undertake a packed state visit to the U.S. this week, making the trip to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

That action cut colonial ties between Britain and the United States, but a special relationship between the nations continues today, which the state visit was designed to recognize.

King Charles and Queen Camilla spent time in Washington, D.C., and New York City during a diplomatic trip that began on Monday, April 27.

Highlights of the Washington itinerary included a garden party, a ceremonial military review,a historic Congressional address by the Kingand a state dinner at the White House.

In New York on Wednesday, April 29, the royals visited One World Trade Center and attended a reception for The King's Trust, one of King Charles' personal charities.

The King also attended a community engagement in Harlem while in N.Y.C. andthe Queen delivered a gift — a missing Winnie the Pooh toy— to the New York Public Library, in connection with her Queen's Reading Room charity.

After the U.S. visit wraps, the King will travel to Bermuda, undertaking his first visit as monarch to a British Overseas Territory.

The British royals' state visit to America proceededafter a shooting happened at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C, on Saturday, April 25. TheAssociated Pressreported that a gunman fired shots at the Washington Hilton that evening, where President Trump, first lady Melania, Vice PresidentJD Vanceand many other prominent political figures attended the press event inside a subterranean ballroom, and aSecret Service agent was injured.

The following day, a Buckingham Palace spokespersontold PEOPLE the visit would continue as planned.

"Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned," a palace spokesperson said on Sunday, April 26.

"The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway tomorrow," they added.
