PSD closing mountain schools May 5 because of forecasted snow

Poudre School District is closing its three mountain schools May 5 because offorecasts calling for snow accumulations of 8 or more inches in the Red Feather Lakes and up to 2 feet in other mountain areas of Northern Colorado, spokesperson John Cope told the Coloradoan.

USA TODAY Red Feather Lakes Elementary School in Red Feather Lakes, Colo., is pictured on Dec. 4, 2023.

Livermore, Red Feather Lakes and Stove Prairie elementary schools will all be closed for the day, Cope said in a text message the evening of May 4.

Students’ families and staff were notified of the closures by email earlier in the day, Cope said.

"Since these conditions may make it unsafe to provide student transportation on mountain routes, this decision was made out of an abundance of caution, with student and staff safety as our top priority," read the email from Tom Schachet, principal of the three mountain schools that Cope shared with the Coloradoan.

The email said the district will continue to monitor forecasts and provide an update about the status of the mountain schools for May 6 "as soon as possible."

The closures only affect the three mountain elementary schools, Cope told the Coloradoan. All other PSD schools were scheduled to operate on their normal schedules May 5.
